Fusing vintage silhouettes yet accessible wear, A Jakarta based Fashion Designer Juliana Ng was born and raised in Medan. She pursued her Fashion Design degree in Singapore and, upon graduating, started her own brands, Lickstudio in 2016 and Starry in 2018, both based in Jakarta. She has been highly fascinated with history through which she has gained many inspirations in addition to the connections she obtains from her surroundings, be it with people and nature.
To constantly spread kindness to everyone, and striving to do the best for their children are some fundamental traits which Juliana aspires to have from her parents, however she firstly explore the world of art and fashion solely by herself. Juliana began to realize of how much opportunity that she could grab when she moved out from her hometown, Medan as she described the locals as “quite in their own world”. She relentlessly opens her eyes as the universe gives her possibilities to create.
It is Juliana’s wish to create clothing that could bring immeasurable joy to people who wears them and somehow by creating them, could be the tool for her to share her love of art to others. Juliana also produces Beaded Bag for both Lickstudio and Starry.
The revelation of beaded bags started during her visit to a Hong Kong local market where various beaded keychains and dolls were sold. An idea then sparked to modify the use of beading to create something functional that could be used everyday. She started brainstorming and managed to design bags, belt and crop tops made entirely out of beads as part of a Lickstudio collection. As for Starry, she wanted to offer different characteristics while still retaining the same beading technique so she experimented with different materials such as wood. Undeniably, beaded bags have become staple pieces in Juliana's collection.
At the present time, Juliana is currently handling the production of Starry which has that “retrospective” and timeless touch on each of the pieces and focused on creating ready to wear and beaded bags. She is also partially teaching Fashion Design in Raffles Design Institute.
“I hope people can appreciate small brands. For the quality, time and most importantly ideas we’ve spent to create every single garments. Moreover, get educated! Education is Important!” –Juliana Ng of Starry
